I tried "no poo" with baking soda back last fall, and while it worked ok, some days it would be horrible. I rack that up to living in Colorado where we have really hard water. Now, I can go about 4 days without shampooing. When I do, I use Aubrey Organics shampoo which doesn't have any of the nasty chemicals. On my in-between days I use a rinse with about 3 parts distilled water/1 part Apple Cider vinegar. I infuse that with some chamomile. I pour a little on my head each morning and work it in my scalp like I'm shampooing, then I stand under the shower and let the water wash over my head while I take the rest of my shower. I don't get the greasy feeling anymore. Lately I've been experimenting to see if I can go 8 days without shampooing. On the last 4 days I made another rinse with the same amount of water/apple cider vinegar, but added in another part of with hazel. I read where witch hazel will break down oils. So far it's day 6 and my hair still feels soft and the scalp isn't greasy at all. It's a little harder to style, though. I have medium thickness hair that has a wave in it, but not curls.

Ok so this is a bit late, obviously, but I just found your blog (can't remember where--Peonies [@peoniestweets]? LPC [@AmidPrivilege]? Someone else equally as cool?) and am very busy catching up.
I had to de-lurk to comment on this one because I haven't used shampoo in over 2 years, and I love it. I did have that obnoxious "detox period", but now can wash my hair with water only every couple of days. If the natural oil starts to build up more than my wood brush can handle, I wash with a rosemary tea/infusion (a lot like you did with olive oil: work it in, leave it on a few minutes, rinse) and it's back to normal... and my hair is totally normal! (It's always been completely straight and is fine, but there's a LOT of it.) When I tell people I don't use shampoo they always say things like, "Wow, you can't even tell" (implying, of course, that it's gross but it looks ok), to which I reply that it's not that it's not clean, just that I go about cleaning it a different way than you. Also, brushing often (with a natural-bristled brush) is key.
Anyway, thanks for sharing all the stories of your project! I'm enjoying getting ideas for things I could do myself.

I'm reading this late, but I just had to comment! I totally identify with you, since I also have curly hair. At the end of this summer, I decided to try the CG (Curly Girl) approach (no sulfates, no 'cones, blah blah) just to see what happened. Since I was nervous about only water washing, I decided to go the conditioner-washing approach, and I haven't looked back. I never had that transitional phase at all where my hair looked yucky, and in fact, it looked better from Day One on. I only co-wash it maybe 2x a week, and I can wear it down even on the days I don't wash it, which I never could do before.

Anyway, your water washing experience sounds traumatic, and I don't want to convince you to go back to it (especially since I don't do it myself), but...you should check out naturallycurly.com -- there's a before and after thread on there that is incredible, and there are lots of tips. Just...if you're feeling like it's even *more* something you wouldn't do now. :)

Amen. I have super greasy, thin hair, and plain ol water just doesn't cut it! Ditto for the skin. Although, annoyingly, I've developed some weird, painful super dry patches on my forehead. NOT cool.

The 50s was the day of Toni home permanents and pin curls.
The 60s brought straight, blonde, surfer hair and curly hair was not accepted. Truly NTKOG would have slept every night with her hair rolled up in orange juice cans. (Orange juice came only in cans and one added three cans of tap water to the Tupperware plastic pitcher.) If you had long hair with a little curl to it you ironed it on the ironing board. After Woodstock curly, natural hair has in. This was brand new wash 'n' wear hair. And then there was the 70s. Even if you had curly hair you still had a permanent and wore an Afro, and used a plastic pick to fluff it up. Yikes! I don't remember the 80s because I had kids. Oh, yeah, that was the age of pony tails and dirty hair.

Until NTKOG and I watched Hairspray at a young age, I always thought you were kidding about the orange juice cans and irons (...I mean, come now, orange juice doesn't come in cans).

Ugh! Definitely a no-go for blondes with fine, straight hair!

Oh, NTKOG! What kind of madness is our mother trying to write about now? Next, she's going to tell us that computers used to be the size of rooms or that microwaves never used to exist!

She did used to have a pet dinosaur, right? ;)

<3

Go Angels! (::sigh:: My two favorite teams: the Red Sox, and who ever is playing against the Yankees!)

1. If that's really your mom posting, that's awesome.
2. This no'poo movement sounds like crap.
3. Was this the first picture sort-of-reveal on NTKOG?

TMI is A-ok.
