I swear, it’s like deja vu reading your blog sometimes girl. I, too, at your age (oh good God.. did I just write that?) took my ass on the bus all the way to nyc. It was a nasty nine hours one way, and 12 back. Gag me. I rode next to a drooler and behind the classic bitch-on-the-cell-phone-the-effing-time AND I had a headache the whole time because it was a day trip, which I don’t recommend because the sun shines like, right IN YOUR EYE.

Was it hell-ish?

Ya.

Did I love that experience? Did it make me feel alive? Independent? Lucky to be young and free?

Absolutely.

Someday you, too, will look back at the unwashed masses with fondness. (Although I suspect you already do… you’re just that kinda girl.)

Totally agree with you about the train. You could try Megabus though, it’s cheap and I’ve always had my own seat. Two seats, really. And there’s wifi.

I can’t comment on US long-distance buses, but for some trips in the UK bus can be more fun than train and even faster than same (depends on where you’re going to and from) and way more than flying by the time you get through the “go to airport that’s half an hour from everywhere, check-in, make you feel safer but stupid security checks (woman wearing wedge heels, guy wearing Converse, so who’s shoes do you x-ray? Big clue: Not the ones you could hide several lb of C4 in), boarding queue, 90 minutes in a veal crate, queue to get back off the plane, walk a mile to baggage reclaim and still arrive before your bag that’s just too big to make a carry-on, walk another mile to the transport hub, travel another 30 to 90 minutes by bus or light rail to get into town”…

Honestly, I’m surprised you lasted so long without wanting to find a place to hide and then pouring hand sanitizer all over it! I just flew from Hawaii to Seattle last week and although nobody sat as close to me as they did in your case, I couldn’t believe I lasted so long in such a small space. Bleh!
