Thank you for your comments regarding the Hornitos® Tequila television commercial.
While this commercial went through a multi-stage review process and was tested extensively with male and female consumers prior to launch, we acknowledge your concerns and want you to know that Hornitos Tequila is removing the advertisement from our media buy.
Throughout the ad’s creative development, we were in no way suggesting or condoning any kind of inappropriate or illegal behavior.
We thank you again for taking the time to contact us and certainly value your feedback.
Sincerely,
Paula K. Erickson

AWESOME! I’ve been MIA lately, writing lots of fiction about werewolves and jellyfish, and spending as much time as possible with Sister before I move to Vegas for the summer. Gave notice: yesterday. Last day of work: June 22. Leave for Vegas: June 29. My life is starting: gosh, now, I guess.
But glad to see that enough people were disgusted by the Hornitos commercial that the company recognized it showed behavior they shouldn’t endorse. I might celebrate this with a (non-Hornitos) margarita.

I got the exact same letter (except with my name at the top of it). At least they’re pulling it – that’s good news!
Are we allowed to comment on the tags? Because if so…
I saw on twitter that you walked out of Bridesmaids, and I am seriously still in shock. I saw it like opening weekend before anyone had told me anything about it, and I laughed, like, the entire two hours. My husband and I both thought it was hilarious and the funniest chick comedy ever (granted, there aren’t many.) So I’m surprised to hear you hated it. Thoughts? Also I see now on your sidebar that you’re reading Joan Didion. I have read her Miami book while I was living there, and then read “Year of Magical Thinking” which I’m assuming you’re reading if you’re into her? It’s amazing. Highly recommend if you haven’t made it to that one on her list yet. Okay so yea, I’ve successfully commented on everything but the content of this post.
I love that they removed it! I enjoy your blog & good luck in Vegas!
You did it! Well, you and people like you. Still, I’m giving you sole credit.
Yay! Congratulations. That’s so exciting that it actually worked. It’s cool to see that you really can make a difference in the world when you aren’t afraid to stand up for what’s right.
If I may play devil’s advocate for a minute . . . I think this whole thing was planned. I think they knew (and hoped) the commercial would draw criticism. The more the better. It’s one of those “No publicity is bad publicity” situations. After all, they’re the tequila company that nobody has heard of. So the more editorials or blogs or whatever that talk about it, the better. Case in point, until the post a few weeks ago, I’d never heard of Hornitos. Now I have. (I’m not criticizing your post, by the way. I’m just making a point.)
Not only that, I guarantee that many of the people who clicked the YouTube link from various blogs or editorials (which were critical of the spot) decided that contrary to the various authors’ condemnations, they actually LIKED the commercial. It’s not exactly what I’d call “going viral,” but it’s the same concept. Free publicity where the internet does for free what you would normally have to pay for.
As far as pulling the spot goes, the commercial has already had its run. It’s a simple joke that wouldn’t have had a long shelf life anyway. So pulling it now is win-win, because (A) they probably didn’t have much of a media buy budget anyway, and (B) now they can look like they’re responsible after all (golly, we had no idea that some might take offense!)
I’m such a cynic.
If I can bring this a little closer to home, it reminds me of when Ashley Madison (I swear I’m not an employee) put up a billboard her in L.A. Various religious groups were up in arms about the outrage of such a thing. There was all kinds of press over it. Which meant all kinds of free publicity for AM, all for the price of one measly billboard.
well hot damn. good for them for coming to their senses.
good work getting the commercial pulled! and excellent though-provoking writing on the subject in the previous two posts.
